Locally known as 'The Broad', Broad Street is a wide open street, it developed alongside the town ditch in front of the city wall, north of the street.

By 1230 the road was used for a horse market and called Horsemonger Lane. There are notable independently owned university buildings in Broad Street comprising of Bailiol and Trinity Colleges, the Sheldonian Theatre, the Weston Library and the Museum of the History of Science, Blackwell's original bookshop opened in 1879. In addition, there is one remaining timber framed public house called the White Horse.
